New pics

New pictures added to Baby's first Christmas!

4 months: Devon (January)

Devon is nearly 4 months old as we head into 2009. He even stayed up past midnight with us to ring in the new year only to fall asleep at 12:03. I stayed up until 2:00, but I was experiencing early stages of a cold and could not stay up another minute. Devon must have known that I needed sleep because he slept for 8 straight hours in my arms. It was amazing! On New Year's day we spent a few hours at my Mom's house where we had homemade scones, played Bunko, and rocked out to Guitar Hero.

I was sick for the next few days which means that the baby got sick too. I got better and a week later Joe got THE WORST flu. Which also meant that the baby got sick again. I took Devon to the doctor and it turns out that he has a respiratory infection. There isn't any medicine that we can give him. All we can do is wait for it to go away. He is usually such a pleasant baby and only cries when something is really wrong (ie: hungry, needs a diaper, tired), but now that he has a hard time breathing which makes eating and getting quality sleep a challenge so he cries a lot these days. I went over to Jane's house yesterday and her husband, Brian, came out of his room to see who was over because he didn't recognize the cry since Devon so rarely cries at all. It is sad to know that he isn't feeling good and that there's nothing you can do to help. He seems to be getting better every day, but we'll see how long it lasts.

In the last month he has really started to look like a "kid" and less like a baby. It's almost as if you can tell what he will look like when he is 3. He has really gotten the hang of cooing and it is just about the favorite part of my day. The sounds he makes are so funny and "classic" baby sounding he should be in a movie for them. But the best thing he has learned in the last month is .... giggling. Oh. My. God. It is HILARIOUS. He has only done it a hand full of times, but it so funny. I was holding him and making dorky faces into a mirror when he did it for the first time I had tears running down my face I was laughing so hard. I was really glad that Joe was there for it because Dads seem to miss a lot of "firsts" since they are usually at work. Speaking of which, I went to a Yoga teacher appreciation dinner tonight and left Joe with the baby. When I came home he said," I don't know if this counts, but I think the kid rolled over." I went to the crib and his head and chest were to the side, but his hips and belly were face down on the crib! I don't know if that counts .... since no one got to actually watch it happen .... lets say it doesn't.

UPDATE: So about an hour later that night he TOTALLY rolled over. I was standing next to the crib watching him play and kick and I had a feeling he was going to do it again. I called Joe in and sure enough .... he rolled over right before our eyes. It was so cool! Once again it was great to experience that with the both of us being there when it happened for the first time. Video coming soon!

Let's go to the movies: Ghost town

Ricky Gervais is hilarious and was the only reason I rented this. He was a writer for the Office and he is so incredibly funny. Nothing complicated going on with the the plot, but it made me do that laugh where your mouth is open, but no sound is coming out because you are laughing so hard. With any other actor this movie would be a flop, but he is brilliant! Tea Leone was funny too. Office fans will love this.

Let's go to the movies: Eagle eye

Seriously ... what's the point? This was such a waste of time. I really thought I was going to like this, but there were so many loose ends and it couldn't have been more lame. I did like the scene where they are sliding on the belt that moves your luggage at the airport and it was like a giant slide. I have always wanted to do that, but that was about it. It was good in theory and mildly creative, but the final product did not deliver. This was a let down.

Let's go to the movies

So ... most of my days (and nights) are consumed by all things baby, cleaning, cooking, laundry, yoga, working out, Joe, and television. As boring as this may sound to some, I love my life. Simple. Satisfying and uncomplicated.

With the new year I wanted to start reviewing movies I see and give my take on them. Nothing serious, just a little something about the movie, what I liked, what I hated, etc.

Mama Mia:

Hated it.

I know it is a musical and everything is supposed to be over the top, but this was too much. I couldn't take it! All the middle aged women and their secret handshakes, and googly eyes and really, really, really bad acting was nauseating. Not to mention I didn't really like the music so it was hard for me to get into it. When the main girl got all of her potential fathers on the boat I just fast forwarded it to the end so I could see who it was. I grew up watching musicals (a true musical fan will easily be able to tell me the movie that the title to this blog comes from) so I know a good one when I see it and this definitely was not it

3 months: Devon (December) Baby's first Christmas

Those who know me best know that I am not .... shall I say .... a "fan" of Christmas. There is so much stress, expense, expectation and lack of sleep that goes on for this "season of giving" that I wish we could all agree to give each other the gift of skipping Christmas in exchange for a nice meal together. Sort of a Thanksgiving do-over with the same sentiment, but different food for variety. Bah humbug! I kid, I kid. But seriously, it is usually a very hectic time of year and with a new baby in tow I was expecting the stress to, at the very least, double.

To work around any feelings of having to hurry to get somewhere every day I decided .... not to. The baby and I would get up, get ready, and we would get there when we got there. Some days it was 11:00 and some days it was 3:00. The baby is not on a true, predictable schedule yet so depending on how much sleep we both got the night before depended on when we got up which would dictate the rest of the day. I planned on going over to my Mom's house everyday the week leading up to Christmas since my brother, Ben, and his 3 kids were staying there. My older sister, Jane, lives in town and she was over there most days as well with her 4 girly girls so it was an easy way to see most of my family which was really fun. The scene at the Turner house was pretty laid back this year. My Dad bought Guitar Hero with the drum kit, lead guitar and bass making it easy for a bunch of us to play together at one time. I played bass a few times, never tried the lead guitar, but my heart is in the drums. I admittedly suck at keeping time, but it's a challenge and it's fun!

Christmas Eve Joe and I went to his Mom's house for food and opening gifts. It is a frenzy with no organization, but it is always a good time. Coral crocheted a beautiful baby blanket for me that was totally unexpected, but so sweet of her. I really do love getting handmade gifts. 2 hours later we were on our way back home. His Mom's side of the family has a party every year in Sahuarita at his uncle's house, but we decided not to go because it is well over an hour drive (one way) from our house. Ben, Elizabeth (my younger sister) and her husband, Nick, came down from Phoenix stayed at our place and we had a blast! We stayed up talking til nearly 5 am, but it was worth it to be able to catch up.

Christmas afternoon we went to my Mom's house. The kids opened up all their gifts and the adults got a gift or two as well. My parents always give us cash which is so awesome. Since I have four other siblings we rotate who we buy for every year. That way it doesn't get too expensive and we are in charge of one family instead of four. This year Elizabeth had my family and she gave us a huge basket of popcorn, candy, and the first season of Dexter. The baby got some clothes, but my favorite thing was a painting that she did of a Buddha in black, grey and red. I am still totally amazed at her talent. It is so beautiful. I haven't hung it yet because I want to put it in just the right place. I'm thinking my yoga room. We were pretty tired to say the least, but it was fun to celebrate Christmas with family and with Devon for the first time.
